The incident, which struck the East-West Pipeline, will significantly restrict crude flow as repairs are undertaken, according to two regional officials familiar with the assessment.
The East-West Pipeline, also known as Petroline, traverses the entire Saudi peninsula, stretching from oil-rich fields in the east to the Red Sea port of Yanbu in the west. Its strategic importance lies in providing an alternative export route for Saudi crude, allowing shipments to bypass the volatile Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway frequently at the center of regional geopolitical tensions. The pipeline has a reported capacity of approximately 5 million barrels per day (bpd), making its partial or full incapacitation a notable concern for global energy markets.
The nature of the damage and the projected duration of repairs – 'weeks' – suggest a targeted and effective assault. While specific details of the drone attack and the perpetrators remain under investigation and have not been publicly confirmed, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles points to a sophisticated and potentially state-backed or state-supported actor. Previous drone attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure have been attributed to, or claimed by, Yemen's Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran. However, officials have not yet publicly linked the latest incident to any specific group.
