WANGARATTA, Victoria – Independent Australian Member of Parliament, Helen Haines, remains in critical condition following a vehicular incident outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, with a federal minister alleging the driver reversed to deliberately strike her a second time. The incident has sent shockwaves through Australia's political landscape, prompting calls for heightened security for public officials.
The alleged details emerged from Victoria's Minister for Police, Alex Drummond, who described the incident as deeply concerning. “Information we have received, which is now part of an active police investigation, suggests the driver who initially struck Ms. Haines then reversed their vehicle, seemingly with the intent to do it a second time,” Drummond stated in a press conference in Melbourne. “This is an incredibly serious allegation, and our thoughts are with Ms. Haines and her family as she fights for her life.”
Ms. Haines, the federal MP for the rural electorate of Indi, was reportedly interacting with a member of the public near her office on Monday afternoon when the incident occurred. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after, finding Ms. Haines with severe injuries. She was immediately transported to a local hospital before being airlifted to a major Melbourne trauma centre, where medical staff describe her condition as critical but stable.
