LAKESIDE, Oregon – A community in rural Oregon is grappling with profound grief following a tragic shooting Thursday at Willow Creek Elementary School that claimed the lives of a five-year-old boy and a dedicated young teacher in a special needs classroom. The attack has left families shattered and prompted an outpouring of sorrow and support across the region.
Five-year-old Leo Rodriguez was identified by family members as one of the victims. His aunt, Maria Rodriguez, speaking on behalf of the family, conveyed their devastation, stating, “Our family is broken and lost. Leo was a light, full of joy and curiosity, and to have him taken from us in such a senseless act is unbearable. We are trying to understand, but there are no words for this pain.” Leo was reportedly a student in the special needs program at the school.
Also among the deceased was Emily Chen, a 26-year-old teacher who colleagues described as having found her “dream job” working with young children with special needs. Dr. Evelyn Reed, Superintendent of the Lakeside School District, expressed deep condolences, stating, “Ms. Chen was an extraordinary educator, deeply committed to her students. She brought boundless energy and compassion to Willow Creek, and her loss leaves an irreplaceable void in our school and hearts. She truly loved her work, and her students adored her.”
The shooting unfolded mid-morning at the elementary school located in Lakeside, a close-knit community approximately 20 miles inland from the Oregon coast. Authorities have confirmed that the incident occurred within a self-contained special needs classroom. While details surrounding the assailant remain under investigation, local law enforcement confirmed the individual responsible was neutralized at the scene, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
